Some Like It Hot

Some Like It Hot is a 1959 American comedy film directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The supporting cast includes George Raft, Joe E. Brown, Pat O'Brien and Nehemiah Persoff. The film was adapted by Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond from the story by Robert Thoeren and Michael Logan. Logan had already written the story – but without the gangsters – for a German film, Fanfaren der Liebe (directed by Kurt Hoffmann, 1951), so Wilder's film is considered by some as a remake.[by whom?]

During 1981, after the worldwide success of the French comedy La Cage aux Folles, United Artists re-released Some Like It Hot to theatres. In 2000, the American Film Institute listed Some Like It Hot as the greatest American comedy film of all time.

Dr. Strangelove

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, commonly known as Dr. Strangelove, is a 1964 black comedy film which satirized the nuclear scare. It was directed, produced, and co-written by Stanley Kubrick, starred Peter Sellers and George C. Scott, and featured Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn, Slim Pickens, and Tracy Reed. The film was loosely based on Peter George's Cold War thriller novel Red Alert, also known as Two Hours to Doom.

The story concerns an unhinged United States Air Force general who orders a first strike nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. It follows the President of the United States, his advisors, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a Royal Air Force (RAF) officer as they try to recall the bombers to prevent a nuclear apocalypse. It separately follows the crew of one B-52 as they try to deliver their payload.

In 1989, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. It was listed as number three on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs.

Cast

* Peter Sellers as:
o Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, a British exchange officer
o President Merkin Muffley, the American Commander-in-Chief
o Dr. Strangelove, the wheelchair-bound nuclear war expert and former Nazi whose uncontrollable hand apparently has a Nazi mind of its own.
* George C. Scott as General Buck Turgidson, an over-the-top and patriotic General who does not trust Ambassador de Sadeski
* Sterling Hayden as General Jack D. Ripper, who is a paranoid ultra-patriot. His name is a reference to Jack the Ripper.
* Slim Pickens as Major T. J. "King" Kong, the B-52 Stratofortress bomber's commander and pilot. Kong's name is a reference to King Kong.
* James Earl Jones as Lieutenant Lothar Zogg, the B-52's bombardier.[1]
* Keenan Wynn as Colonel Batguano, the Army officer who finds Mandrake and the dead Ripper. His name is a play on bat excreta (bat guano).
* Peter Bull as Soviet Ambassador Alexei de Sadeski. The name is possibly a play on "Marquis de Sade"
* Shane Rimmer as Capt. "Ace" Owens, the B-52 co-pilot
* Tracy Reed as Miss Scott, General Turgidson's secretary and mistress, the film's only female character. Reed also appears as "Miss Foreign Affairs," the centerfold in the June 1962 issue[2] of Playboy magazine that Major Kong is shown reading in the cockpit

Duck Soup

Watch Marx Brothers - Duck Soup(1933).avi in Comedy  |  View More Free Videos Online at Veoh.com

Duck Soup is a 1933 Marx Brothers anarchic comedy film written by Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby, with additional dialogue by Arthur Sheekman and Nat Perrin, and directed by Leo McCarey. First released theatrically by Paramount Pictures on November 17, 1933, it starred what were then billed as the "Four Marx Brothers" (Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo) and also featured Margaret Dumont, Raquel Torres, Louis Calhern and Edgar Kennedy. It was the last Marx Brothers film to feature Zeppo, and the last of five Marx Brothers movies released by Paramount.[1]

Compared to the Marx Brothers' previous Paramount films, Duck Soup was a box-office disappointment,[2] although it was not a "flop" as is sometimes reported.[3] The film opened to mixed reviews,[4] although this by itself did not end the group's business with Paramount. Bitter contract disputes, including a threatened walk-out by the Marxes, crippled relationships between them and Paramount just as Duck Soup went into production. After the film fulfilled their five-picture contract with the studio, the Marxes and Paramount agreed to part ways.[5][6]

While critics of Duck Soup felt it did not quite meet the standards of its predecessors, critical opinion has evolved and the film has since achieved the status of a classic.[7] Duck Soup is now widely considered to be a masterpiece, and the Marx Brothers' finest film.[4][8]

In 1990 the United States Library of Congress deemed Duck Soup "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Cast

* Groucho Marx as Rufus T. Firefly, who, at Mrs. Teasdale's insistence, becomes the leader of Freedonia.

* Zeppo Marx as Lt. Bob Roland, Firefly's secretary.

* Raquel Torres as Vera Marcal, a femme fatale who is working for Ambassador Trentino.
* Edgar Kennedy as a lemonade vendor, who is just trying to make a living.

Blazing Saddles

Blazing Saddles is a 1974 satirical Western comedy film directed by Mel Brooks. Starring Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, the film was written by Brooks, Andrew Bergman, Richard Pryor, Norman Steinberg, and Al Uger, and was based on Bergman's story and draft. The movie was nominated for three Academy Awards, and is ranked No. 6 on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs list.

The supporting cast also includes Slim Pickens, Alex Karras, David Huddleston, as well as Brooks regulars Dom DeLuise, Madeline Kahn, and Harvey Korman. The film satirizes the racism obscured by myth-making Hollywood accounts of the American West, with the hero being a black sheriff in a mostly white town. MASH

MASH is a 1970 American satirical dark comedy film directed by Robert Altman and written by Ring Lardner, Jr., based on the novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors by Richard Hooker. It is the only feature film in the M*A*S*H franchise. It became one of the biggest hit films of the early 1970s for Twentieth Century Fox, and especially during the Vietnam War era. The film is set during the Korean War, but mirrors the confusion of Vietnam.

The film depicts a unit of medical personnel stationed at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War; however, the subtext is really about the Vietnam War.[1] It stars Donald Sutherland, Tom Skerritt and Elliott Gould, with Sally Kellerman, Robert Duvall, Roger Bowen, Gary Burghoff, Michael Murphy, Rene Auberjonois, David Arkin and Fred Williamson. The film inspired the popular and critically acclaimed television series M*A*S*H, which featured a cast including Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers, Loretta Swit and Jamie Farr, and ran from 1972 to 1983.

The film's title is often rendered as M*A*S*H. However, while asterisks were included in the original poster art and in the subsequent TV series, the title that appears onscreen in the film omits them, in the same appearance as it did on the novel's cover.

Cast

* Donald Sutherland as Capt. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce
* Elliott Gould as Capt. John Francis Xavier "Trapper John" McIntyre
* Tom Skerritt as Capt. Augustus Bedford "Duke" Forrest
* Sally Kellerman as Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan
* Robert Duvall as Major Frank Burns
* Roger Bowen as Lt. Col. Henry Braymore Blake
* René Auberjonois as Father John Patrick "Dago Red" Mulcahy
* John Schuck as Capt. Walter Koskiusko "The Painless Pole" Waldowski, DDS
* Carl Gottlieb as Capt. John "Ugly John" Black
* Danny Goldman as Capt. Murrhardt
* Corey Fischer as Capt. Dennis Patrick Bandini
* Jo Ann Pflug as Lt. Maria "Dish" Schneider
* Indus Arthur as Lt. Leslie
* Dawne Damon as Capt. Scorch
* Tamara Wilcox-Smith as Capt. Bridget "Knocko" McCarthy
* David Arkin as SSgt. Wade Douglas Vollmer/PA Announcer. (Note: In the movie, Duke called him "Lee".)
* Gary Burghoff as Cpl. "Radar" O'Reilly
* Ken Prymus as Pfc. Seidman
* Fred Williamson as Capt. Oliver Harmon "Spearchucker" Jones
* Michael Murphy as Capt. Ezekiel Bradbury "Me Lay" Marston IV
* Timothy Brown as Cpl. Judson
* Bud Cort as Pvt. Lorenzo Boone
* G. Wood as Brig. Gen. Charlie Hammond
* Kim Atwood as Ho-Jon
* Dale Ishimoto as Korean doctor
* Bobby Troup as SSgt. Gorman
* Marvin Miller as PA Announcer

Because of the number of unknown actors that Altman had cast, the opening credits, after the established stars, are entirely "Introducing…."

Gary Burghoff was the only member of the movie cast to become a regular on the television series. However, other actors did appear in both. G. Wood, who played Gen. Hammond, appeared also in three episodes of the series. Timothy Brown had different roles in the film (as Cpl. Judson) and, for a brief time, the series (as "Spearchucker" Jones). Corey Fischer played Capt. Bandini in the film and the guitar-playing dentist Cardozo in the TV episode "5 O'Clock Charlie".

Fred Williamson, who portrays "Spearchucker" Jones — a neurosurgeon who played professional football before being drafted into the Army - actually played professional football (for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, and Kansas City Chiefs). In the film's football sequence, he appears wearing anachronistically white football shoes (football players did not wear white shoes until Joe Namath sported them in the late 1960s). Tom Woodeshick appears in one shot at the end of the football game taking a hit from a joint. Likewise, Timothy Brown had a real-life career with the Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Baltimore Colts. Ben Davidson, who was the player who spat his drink in Radar's face and was thrown out of the game in the second half, had a long career with the Raiders.

It Happened One Night

It Happened One Night is a 1934 American romantic comedy film with elements of screwball comedy directed by Frank Capra, in which a pampered socialite (Claudette Colbert) tries to get out from under her father's thumb, and falls in love with a roguish reporter (Clark Gable). The plot was based on the story Night Bus by Samuel Hopkins Adams, which provided the shooting title. It Happened One Night was one of the last film romantic comedies created before the MPAA began enforcing the 1930 production code in 1934. In spite of its title the movie takes place over several nights.

The film was the first to win all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay), a feat that would not be matched until One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and later by The Silence of the Lambs (1991). In 1993, It Happened One Night was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It was remade twice, both as musicals: Eve Knew Her Apples (1945) starring Ann Miller,[2] and You Can't Run Away from It (1956) starring Jack Lemmon and June Allyson.

* Claudette Colbert as Ellie Andrews
* Walter Connolly as Alexander Andrews

* Jameson Thomas as "King" Westley
* Alan Hale as Danker

The Graduate

The Graduate is a 1967 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Mike Nichols.[1] It is based on the 1963 novel The Graduate by Charles Webb, who wrote it shortly after graduating from Williams College. The screenplay was by Buck Henry, who makes a cameo appearance as a hotel clerk, and Calder Willingham. The film tells the story of Benjamin Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman), a recent university graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), and then proceeds to fall in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).

In 1996, The Graduate was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It ranked as the seventh greatest film of all time on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies.

Adjusted for inflation, the film is #19 on the list of highest-grossing films in the United States and Canada.

The film is a spoof of the disaster film genre, and a close parody of the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!.[2] The film is well-noted for its use of absurdist and surrealist comedy.

Airplane! was a huge financial success, grossing over US$83 million in North America alone, against a budget of just $3.5 million.[1] The film's creators received the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Comedy, and nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and a BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay.[3]

In the years since its release, Airplane!'s reputation has grown substantially beyond its modest comic intentions. The film was voted the 10th-funniest American comedy on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs list in 2000, and ranked 6th on Bravo's 100 Funniest Movies. In a major 2007 survey by Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, it was judged the second greatest comedy film of all time.[4]

In 2008, Airplane! was selected by Empire magazine as one of The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time and in 2010, it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
